'Moorsholm Memorial Hall' Directions Page

Directions

Moorsholm is a mile north of the A171, about 7 miles east of Guisborough and 17 miles west of Whitby. The turning off the A171 ('Moor Road') is easily identified by the distinctive Freebrough Hill, that forms the basis of the Memorial Hall logo.

From the West, follow the A171 round the Guisborough By-pass and towards the Moors until you climb Birk Brow. Go down the other side, and after 2 miles turn left at the 'Toad Hall Arms' sign for Moorsholm. The Memorial Hall is on the right at the end of Moor Close.

From the North, follow the B1366 from Loftus to Liverton Village. Turn right (SP Moorsholm). In Moorsholm, go through along the High Street until you climb a short hill after the bus stop. The Memorial Hall is on the left.
NOTE This route includes a narrow, winding hill, tricky in bad weather. If in any doubt, continue on the B1366 until it reaches the A171 Moor Road, turn right, and follow the directions below.

From the East, follow the A171 from Whitby. After the Jolly Sailor Inn on the left, take the next right at Freebrough Hill.

From the South, make your way to Castleton in the Esk Valley, and then follow the unclassified road past the station until it reaches the A171. Turn right, and then left at Freebrough Hill (as above)

Satnav Users

When coming from Guisborough, many satnavs will tell you to turn left opposite Lockwood Reservoir, just before the Castleton turning. Do not do this — the route along Swindale Lane and into Moorsholm via Guisborough Road includes a steep, winding dip through a ford which is unsuitable for large vehicles, and treacherous in icy weather. Instead, continue towards Whitby for a mile and take the Freebrough Road turning.
