'Moorsholm Memorial Hall' Reginald Shaw Page

Reginald Shaw

1157058 Private Reginald Shaw is one of the two Second World War soldiers commemorated on our plaque. He was nephew of Private John Shaw, and died in an accident on the 19th of November 1942 on exercise manoeuvres in this country whilst serving with the Pioneer Corps. He was 21, one of 4 children of George and Ellen Shaw of Ness Farm, and lived with his wife Mary in Dunsdale. His gravestone is in Guisborough Cemetery.

Ellen Boyes, his niece (who is named after his mother, who died on Moorsholm Show day 1931, when he was only 10) wrote: “I visited the cemetery one cold and bright sunny morning in January and found quite a few War Graves, yet all the time I was searching I felt myself drawn to one in particular — that was in fact to be my Uncle Reg — a sad but poignant memory. It has renewed my endeavour to see the Memorial Hall remain a centre point of this village.“
